Biography

Welcome to my website. I am Amalia Rottmann and I am here to share with you my wonderful and rewarding professional experience as child developmental specialist.

I was born and raised in Lima-Peru. I grew up with a loving family and an amazing grandfather, a former Minister of Education who was my mentor in all intellectual and education matters. Despite all this, I always wanted to leave my country dreaming of an education in a developed country and preferably in a big cosmopolitan city. So, as soon as I got married and I graduated from my Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Sciences with a major in Semantics, Semiotics and everything about communicating messages (pictorial, symbolic and subliminal ways) I left Lima and moved to France to specialize in cultural differences and human communication.

After spending 10 years in Paris, I returned to Lima with a Doctorate Degree, a very respectable resume, amazing lifetime memories from my Parisian life, a French citizenship and best of all, two wonderful children.

Back in my hometown, I received an offer from an internationally awarded and recognized University, which I did not hesitate to accept. I was named Associate Dean for their newly created Faculty of Communication Sciences and I was hired to create, develop and manage the future career of Advertising, which I did from designing the curricula to select and hire the entire faculty.

By the time my children came to a school age, I tragically lost a brother who suffered from emotional, language and communication challenges. Both were huge reasons to feel compelled to travel again in search for answers and a progressive schooling for my children. This time, I was not interested anymore in commercial or political form of human communication, but in the very basic: children communication and infants and toddlers’ development.

I owed this to my brother, and to the world that gave me so much. I wanted to be able to help children succeed and be happy despite any developmental challenge they may face.

I completed a Master’s Degree in Special Education for Early Childhood. I knew that the sooner you start helping a child, the better outcome you achieve.

Coming from the professional world of messages, images and semantics I became a passionate of the autism spectrum disorders, and this, opened me all the doors to understand a whole range of syndromes, disorders, disabilities and challenges from emotional-behavioral to sensory integration and communication. Few professionals want to invest themselves in such an unknown spectrum of unanswered questions. I did not take the autism and all the co-morbid pathologies that come with it, as a big frustrating unsolved question, or as an unprofitable métier, but as entirely the opposite. For me, learning about Early Childhood Development and all the pathologies that may occur as a result of genetic or environmental reasons was the golden bridge to my professional, vocational and personal happiness.

For the last 15 years, I have not stopped learning about infants and toddlers’ development, sensory integration, language and communication related challenges, and finally emotional and behavioral issues.

Prestigious institutions in Miami, Florida and Chapel Hill, North Carolina opened me their doors for learning and professional practice.

Now that my two grown up children are attending college, I have plenty of time to catch up in all I could have known and done better to help my brother. I may not be helping him anymore, but I am helping other children working with their families, pediatricians, geneticists and therapists as multidisciplinary teams for the better outcome for each individual case.

I feel so fortunate and thankful for the amazing professionals in the United States and Peru who keep sharing with me their knowledge and trust.

Finally I have no words to thank enough the parents who gave me the opportunity to work with their beloved children and generously allowed me to share videos, pictures and experiences with other parents and professionals.

My Philosophy

I like talking about abilities, not about disabilities, because every child has the ability to be happy.

A child’s favorite activity can be fostered into a talent.

A talent would give any child a functional and happy life.
